Site Captains Needed!

The DRC is looking for site captains of all ages to lead groups all over Greater Dundalk on April 14th for Project Clean Stream.

Site captains can pick an area to clean or be assigned one by the DRC. You can be a captain with 2-100 people helping you! No group is too small!

Your roles would be to:
Recruit your friends, families, classmates, and neighbors to help clean an area
Pick up supplies the morning of the event (gloves, trash bags, etc)
Oversee assigned cleanup site
Ensure everyone is having fun at your cleanup site
Report the amount of trash picked up at your site to the DRC
Enjoy free breakfast and lunch!
Wear your FREE DRC t-shirt

Now through November 28th, the DRC is accepting entries in its 4th Annual Holiday Cookie Recipe Contest as part of our Main Street Holiday Cookie Tour. This is your chance to share your favorite holiday recipes with the whole community!
Sign up to enter the contest by November 21st to be eligble to WIN A PRIZE just for entering!

There are 5 prize categories: Best Overall, Traditional, Gourmet, Decorated, and People’s Choice.

We have been hoping the forecasts would improve...but things are just NOT looking good for bringing out the kids in costume on Saturday 10/29!

Our costume contest host, Bob Turk, agrees, noting that temps will be in the upper 30s at that time with winds near 25mph...We are sorry that the weather isn't cooperating with what promised to be an amazing event...but we hope you take the opportunity to enjoy the time inside, where its warm and dry...

Aug 18 2011 7:00PM Eagle Scout Project Fundraiser

Local resident Jared is trying to raise money to purchase pocket flags that will be folded and placed in a 3x3 inch baggie so that American soldiers will be able to keep them in their breast pocket while overseas. It is a little piece of home that will mean much to those men and women so far away from home. He also is hoping to have enough funds to purchase small Bibles to send overseas as well.

In order to help fund this project he is planning a fundraiser at 7pm on Aug 18^th at St. Helena Community building.

This will be a “mock fashion show” for both genders working with local amateur designer Amanda Cox.

The band 7ate9 will also be performing… this is four boys from our scout troop who have a band together doing all family appropriate songs! (Jared, Andrew, Jacob and Alex).

Great night of fun for the whole family!

The tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

We will have some snacks for free and hot dogs and soda will be sold.

All proceeds will go to the project and donations are welcome!

The 77th Annual Dundalk 4th Of July Parade will be held on Monday, July 4, 2011 starting at 8:15AM. This year’s theme is “A Star Spangled Town“.

We will clean up the section between Merritt Boulevard and Poplar Avenue in the Berkshire Community. This section has many elderly residents along the stream in this area who are not capable doing it themselves. This is not only the right thing to do by assisting these elderly people. To our knowledge this section has never been cleaned before so we can use all the volunteers we can get. Registration is in the field at 1799 Durwood Road, Dundalk, MD 21222

Our cleanups are part of an ongoing effort clean the entire stream by 2014 in preparation for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. (Bread and Cheese Creek has been noted as one of the possible highlighted location on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail) The creek played a rather significant part in the Battle of North Point which took place on September 12, 1814. Both the American and British Troops camped along its banks. It is rumored that the young heroes Daniel Wells (19) and Henry McComas (18) used the stream channel to sneak up on British General Robert Ross killing him with their muskets before being killed in return fire. This important part of our history should not be left the eyesore it currently is.

There will be plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to work the grills as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. As my grandfather always said, “Many hands makes the work light” -- John Long, founder of "Clean Bread and Cheese Creek!"

Community Boat Ramp - parking available on the streets within the community.
Time: 8am - 2pm

The Back River Restoration Committee will be trying to remove tires, debris and plastics from the sand bar and beaches. Ellen Hubbard will again be hosting an event in Red House Run for neighbors in the Chesaco Park Community. Most of our attention will be focused on the Walnut Point Clean Up, but if you live in Rosedale and want to participate please head over to Oakdale Avenue. Project Clean Stream enables several areas in the Back River watershed to get the much needed attention that they deserve. We'll view new images of Sparrows Point, celebrate our accomplishments and the contributions of our board members and volunteers, and get your feedback on our next steps.

Starting at 5:30pm, the evening will include:

* An Opening Recrption for "In the Mill", an exhibit at our office of photographs by William Goodman with an introduction of Bill Barry, director of CCBC's Labor Studies Program, followed by a presentation by Mr. Goodman about his work.

Starting at 7 pm, the business portion of our annual meeting will begin, including:

* Brief updates on DRC's activities and projects for the coming year

* Election of DRC's 2011 Board of Directors

* Discussion and vote on proposed updates to DRC's bylaws, informed by our organization's recent strategic planning process.

We are pleased to announce the nominees for our 2011 Board of Directors: Continuing board members are Rick Sheckells, in charge of environmental initiatives for the Maryland Port Administration and Gayle Adams, who directs community relations for the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. New to our board is nominee Linda Bryan, Community Outreach Coordinator for Ports America Chesapeake. All other members of DRC's board, has staggered terms and are not up for election this year. As always, additional Board nominations by current DRC members are welcome at the meeting.

The Fish Mobile from Phillipls Wharf Environmental Center is visiting Stansbury Park in Dundalk. Hop of board this mobile aquarium to see and touch a variety of creatures all of which make their home in the Chesapeake Bay.

The bus will be parked near the pavillion in Stansbury Park from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 pm. Come by during that time to walk through the displays and learn more about the aquatic animals on board from the visiting biologist.

View over 20 homes in two of Dundalk's most charming neighborhoods adjacent to our historic main street area, designed in the 1920s by several of the same architects and planners who designed Roland Park.

Our National Register Historic District homes have an English Village feel, with stucco exteriors, steeply-pitched slate roofs, front porches, nestled among mature trees.
Single-family homes from the 1940s just three blocks away illustrate neo-colonial, cape cod, and tudor influences, on curvilinear streets with manicured lawns and still more mature trees. There are a few gardens on the tour that are stunning .

Tour begins at the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation office, 11 Center Place. Brochure with map for walking (or very short driving) available. There is a $5.00 charge for the tour, but you will be given a free drink certificate for the Village Coffee & Tea Company at 3-5 Commerce Street. We have extended the tour a little further than last year.

Don't just pick up trash when it makes it to the stream! Join us to help our neighbors remember that the storm drains are connected to our local streams and waterways.

We'll be using vinyl markers with the text, "Drains to Bear Creek" to mark the storm drains in the Stanbrook neighborhood.

May 24 2010 3:00PM Gardening Maintenance

Volunteers helped established two lovely gardens at the grounds of the Ateaze Senior Center last May. About one year later, the gardens are growing, but so are the weeds!

Volunteers are needed again to help spruce up these two gardens and to re-mulch the trees we planted. We will be weeding, mulching, and planting some additional plants. We are also looking for donations of plants, preferably perennials. Please contact Marisa (410-282-0261) if you have a plant you would like to donate.

Please join us after school or after work on Monday the 24th to maintain the work volunteers put in to greening this senior center campus!

Kids ages 6 and up are invited to participate in this first in a series of nature programs to be held at Stansbury Park this summer.

Naturalist Jasmine Wanek from Cromwell Valley Park will present a fun and interesting program about animals and their amazing adaptations that allow them to survive in the wild. Participants will get to meet some of the animals presented and will play games to better understans these amazing adaptations.

April 17th will be Part One of the Plant Off with the Dundalk High team planting trees on Delvale Avenue and Sollers Point Road.

The Dundalk High group will meet in front of the High school on Delvale Ave.

This first clean-up event of the calendar year is organized by the Dundalk Renaissance in partnership with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay's annual Project Clean Stream.

This event is powered by you - the volunteer! Last year more than 70 volunteers participated in cleaning up 6 stream sites or parks along Bear Creek. This year, we will have clean-up groups in 4 neighborhoods:

St. Helena -- meet at the Community Building on Colgate Ave

Bear Creek Park -- meet at the Elementary School

Stansbury Park -- at the end of Moorgate Road

Inverness (Bayside Drive Park and Del Rio Park) -- meet at the park at Bayside Drive

We need volunteers to help collect the litter from these sites, but we also need a photographer and one or two extra people to help with registration in St. Helena. Please contact Marisa if you are interested in one of these other positions.

Please join Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, the DRC's Greening Committee, and other members of the Dundalk community at 48 Kinship Road to help plant the 5,000th tree planted by homeowners through the Growing Home Campaign.

The Growing Home program is an innovative pulbic-private partnership to increas the tree canopy in our region by offering homeowners comprehensive education about planting trees and a cash incentive, the $10 Growing Home Tree Coupon, to encourage tree planting on residential land.

Join the DRC Greening Committee learning basic Tree ID and gear up for the Summer Tree Survey! Rob Prenger, from the Baltimore County Forestry Board, will lead the workshop. Then this summer, we will be taking sample surveys of the trees in our local parks. This can be done on your own, after the workshop, or with groups on select weekend and weekday evenings. Join Baltimore County DEPRM and the Back River Restoration Committee in a Back River stakeholder meeting at the Back River Treatment Plant auditorium from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Participants will learn about how a watershed works and where all the trash comes from. An update on volunteer activities and DEPRM projects in the watershed is included along with progress on current neighborhood assessments. Citizens will complete the evening with a vote on their vision and goals for the watershed plan. Dundalk's 75th Anniversary 4th of July Parade
Come celebrate the 75th year in a row that Dundalkians have come together in a celebration of community and patriotism at our 4th of July Parade. As usual, there will be fire truck sirens, marching bands, floats, antique cars, and community organizations and businesses of all kinds. Fun for the whole family.

Parade starts at Dundalk Avenue and Belclare, follows Belclare to Liberty Parkway, turns left onto Dunglow Road, follows Dunglow to Dunmanway, turns onto Shipping Place past the Dundalk Village Shopping Center, turns right onto Shipway, left onto Admiral Blvd., follows Admiral to Liberty Parkway, and ends at Liberty and Dunmanway.

Bring a blanket or beach chairs, sunglasses or an umbrella, and a camera.
Afterward, head over the the Heritage Fair!

Join us for a spirited, early summer Team Dundalk clean up on Saturday morning. Well collect trash around historic Dundalk, or send volunteers to other neighborhoods as there is need. Take a break from the litter pick-up to water the new shrubs planted in the Main Street earlier this spring.
